Edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale) is a species of plant in the order Asterales, family Asteraceae, sporadically spread in Europe and Asia. It prefers mountain areas with calcareous soil, from the altitude of 1700 m to 3000 m. It has a height of 10-20 cm. The whole plant is covered with hair that protects from dry and ultraviolet waves. The leaves are lanceolate with smooth edge. Flowers mislead us, what appear to be white petals are actually 5-15 bracts that make a nest in stellar form. The flowers itself are yellow, and sit among the upper leaves. It flowers between July and August. The ones that grow in the lowlands are taller and less hairy due to the better weather conditions. It is a rare plant and strictly protected in Romania!
