Horned Lark

The Horned lark (Eremophila alpestris) is a singing bird from the order of Passeriformes, family of Alaudidae. It nests in Europe, Asia, North- and South-America. Prefers mountainous areas, over the upper limit of forests, at an altitude from 1500 meters, above sea level. In Romania a small population lives in the Carpathians, they are non-migratory in Romania. Horned lark are of the size of the sparrow, with a body length of 14-17 cms, wingspan between 30-35 cms, and weight between 26 and 46 grams. Males are slightly larger than females, there is sexual dimorphism. They feed on insects, spiders, seeds. The global population is estimated to 140 million of individuals, the number of Europeans varies between 2 and 6 million nesting pairs. In Romania 150-250 nesting pairs live.
